Accoya timber

What is Accoya?

Accoya is a modified timber that outperforms hardwood in dimensional stability, rot resistance, and longevity. It is produced from sustainably sourced softwood through an acetylation process that transforms its molecular structure.

The result is a timber with a 50-year above-ground guarantee — and 25-year below-ground — that accepts paint and finish better than any hardwood, and that is approved by Historic Environment Scotland for use in listed buildings.

  • 50-year above-ground guarantee
  • Class 1 durability — no further treatment needed
  • Approved Accoya manufacturer
  • Accepted by Edinburgh City Council for listed properties
  • Excellent paint adhesion — minimal maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Accoya wood?

Accoya is a modified timber produced by acetylating sustainably sourced softwood. The process transforms the wood at a molecular level, creating a material that is dimensionally stable, rot-resistant, and suitable for the most demanding environments. It carries a 50-year above-ground guarantee.

Why choose Accoya over hardwood?

Accoya outperforms hardwood in every practical measure: it does not shrink or swell like hardwood, holds paint far better, is guaranteed against rot for 50 years, and is produced from sustainably managed forests. Over its lifetime it is significantly cheaper to maintain.

Is Accoya approved for listed buildings?

Yes. Accoya timber is recognised by Historic Environment Scotland as a suitable material for listed buildings and conservation area properties. We have installed Accoya doors and windows on many Category A and B listed buildings across Scotland.

What paint can I use on an Accoya door?

Any quality exterior paint system can be used on Accoya, and it holds paint better than any other timber species. We apply a primer and two-coat finish in the workshop before delivery. Any RAL colour is available.

How long does an Accoya door take to make?

Lead times depend on complexity and current order book, but typically 10–12 weeks from order to delivery. We'll give you a firm lead time at quotation.

Do Accoya doors need maintenance?

Accoya doors need far less maintenance than untreated timber. A quality paint system will last significantly longer on Accoya than on standard timber. We recommend an inspection and touch-up every 5–7 years, compared to 2–3 years for standard timber.

Can you match an existing door?

Yes. We work from drawings, photographs, or site measurements to replicate existing door profiles, mouldings, and glazing patterns. This is particularly important for listed buildings where like-for-like replacement is a planning requirement.
